Elbow Pain

Common long-term pain conditions associated with elbow pain include:

  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)

  • Golfers elbow (medial epicondylitis)

  • Nerve compression syndromes

Assessment of Elbow Pain

Elbow pain frequently occurs due to overuse of the wrist; the muscles that create wrist movement originate at the elbow. This overuse can be due to one of the following:

  • Muscular weakness - the muscles simply aren’t strong enough to cope with your demands of the activity

  • Compensatory - this could be due to poor movement or strength at the shoulder, meaning you are working harder at the wrist to achieve a specific movement

  • Lack of recovery - putting high stress through a muscle and tendon requires time for it to repair and adapt. If you undertake further activity before this recovery has taken place it may lead to inadequate repair, which is the fundamental cause of tendinopathy.

Treatment for Elbow Pain

This will be based on the assessment findings. If we establish strength deficits or tendinopathy then a specific strength program will be developed and progressed over a few sessions. I can also apply joint mobilisations to the wrist to improve joint movement and reduce stress on the musculature.

If the shoulder is deemed to be playing a part in overloading the wrist, you will be given rehabilitation exercises to address this.

Treatment will always be focussed on specific findings from the assessment, as well as designed to fit into your lifestyle, whether you’re a gym goer or prefer home exercise.
